Apologia Chemistry Module 1

QuestionAnswer
What is Chemistry? Chemistry is the study of matter.
What is Matter? Anything that has mass and takes up space.
What is the system of standard units used universally? The metric system.
What does Mass measure? Mass measures how much matter exists in an object.
What does Weight measure? Weight measures how hard gravity pulls on an object.
The English unit for mass = The Slug.
The metric unit for weight = The Newton
The metric unit for mass = The Gram
The English unit for weight = The Pound
The metric unit for distance = The Meter
The English unit for distance = The Foot
The metric unit for volume = The Liter
The English unit for volume = The Gallon
The English AND metric unit for time = The Second
What is Volume? Volume measures how much space an object occupies.
What does "milli" mean? (Numerically) 0.001
What does "centi" mean? (Numerically) 0.01
What does "kilo" mean? (Numerically) 1,000
1 cubic centimeter is the same as how many milliliters? 1 milliliter (1 cm cubed = 1 mL
What is a Graduated cylinder? A hollow cylinder used to measure the volume of liquid.
What is Accuracy? An indication of how close a measurement is to the true value.
What is Precision? An indication of the scale on the measuring device that was used.
What are the 4 rules to determine the number of significant figures? 1. All nonzero digits are significant. 2. All zeros in front of the first 1-9 are not significant. 3. All zeros between 2 significant numbers are significant. 4. All zeros at the end of a number AND to the right of the decimal point are significant.
What are the 2 rules for scientific notation? 1. Place only 1 digit (not a zero) in front of the decimal point. 2. Only significant figures go in front of the multiplication sign.
Adding and subtracting with significant figures: When adding and subtracting measurements, round your answer so that it has the same precision as the least precise measurement in the calculations.
Multiplying and dividing with significant figures: When multiplying and dividing measurements, round the answer so that it has the same number of significant figures as the measurement with the fewest significant figures.
What is a Hypothesis? An educated guess that attempts to explain some aspect of the world around us.
What is a Theory? A hypothesis once it is confirmed by more rigorous experimentation.
What is a Scientific Law? A theory once it has gone through numerous experiments.
