impact a strong and powerful effect
personification when nonhuman things or objects are written about or described as if they have human traits or actions
allusion a reference to a well-known person, character, place or event that helps the reader understand the story
euphemism a word or phrase used to avoid saying something unpleasant or offensive, for instance saying someone "passed away" instead of "died"
hyperbole exaggeration
irony when a writer or character says something opposite of what is expected to make a point
metaphor describing a thing or person by saying it's something else
simile comparing a thing or person to something else, saying one thing is like another
capitalism a system where people own property and businesses, where goods and services are paid for with money, for example a shoe store selling someone a pair of shoes
socialism a system where the government owns property and businesses and distributes goods and services to people, for example DES giving people food stamps and free childcare
