6.5 aDescription of parts of a story
| Term | Definition |

| Author's Voice | The individuality and personality an author expresses in his/her writing. |
| Protagonist | The main character of the story- usually referred to as the "good guy". |
| Antagonist | The force that tries to oppose the main character; the "bad guy" of the story. This is usually another character but can be a force of nature, society, or even an internal force within the character. |
| Point of view | How the story is told. Who is telling the story- 1st, 2nd, or 3rd person. |
| Characterization | Description of a character- their appearance, personality, traits, etc. Can be told directly or indirectly. |
| Direct characterization | Telling exact character traits- physical, and emotional; like height, personality, temper. |
| Indirect characterization | Descriptions of how how a person acts, walks or talks that makes you figure out their personality. |
| Claim | The main idea of a text. This is also referred to as the thesis statement. |
| Conflict | A struggle between opposing forces. The two types of conflict are internal and external. |
| Mood | The atmosphere or emotion created by writing which is mostly affected by the setting or how characters respond to what's going on. |
| Narrator | The voice that tells the story. |
| Tone | The emotions or attitudes of the author or narrator of the story. |
| Theme | The main idea or message conveyed in a piece of writing. The theme must be a complete sentence. |
| Setting | The time and place where the story occurs. |
| Plot | A series of events in a story: including exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. |
