Figurative Language

6.4d definitions

TermDefinition
simile A comparison of two different things using "like" or "as".
metaphor A comparison of two different things but it DOESN'T use like or as. It says something is/are something.
Personification Language in writing where non-living things/objects are given human traits.
Alliteration The repetition of sounds at the start of words- usually 3+ in a sentence.
Hyperbole An exaggeration which is used for emphasis or humorous effect or dramatics.
Onomatopoeia It is when a word means a given sound.
Idiom A saying or phrase that means something very different from the actual words.
Pun A play on words meant to be humorous where it uses the multiple meaning of words or various spellings.
