Biblical Hebrew 03
Fundamental Biblical Hebrew by Andrew H. Bartelt chapter 3
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| The (definite) article | הַ (added as prefix making noun definite and first letter receives a dagesh forte to keep the patah in a closed syllable) - (virtual doubling, no dagesh, with ה or ח) - הָ (the patah lengthens to a qames when the noun's begins with a guttural) ר א ץ |
| minor exceptions to the definite article | When noun begins with unaccented ץ ה or either ת, article is הֶ - sometimes no dagesh when noun begins with a vocal sewa. - Sometimes first vowel changes. |
| 3 ways of Prepositions | independent words, Proclitic (attached with a dash), Prefixed (when combined with the definite article, it takes the vowel and replaces the he) |
| Conjunction | וְ (doesn't combine, only prefixed) or וּ if the word begins with a vocal shewa |
| Rule of Shewa A & B | a) If two vocal shewas occur together, first changes to hireq (unless waw, then it becomes a shureq). - b) If one shewa is a composite, the first is change to corresponding short vowel of the composite (most commonly patah). |
| Rule of Shewa C | 1) before a yod-shewa, hireq combines with yod as its mater letter. - 2) before 'alep-shewa, 'alep may quiesce (become silent), losing its shewa to long vowel in open syllable |
