EXP3422C Working mem

Exam 3 Ch9

QuestionAnswer
Atkinson-Shiffrin Memory Model Sensory memory and short-term memory model
Sensory memory (from Atkinson-shiffrin) Separate for different senses, rapid decay (transient sensations)
STM (from Atkinson-shiffrin) multimodal, small capacity, reversal preserves info in STM to transfer to LTM
Transient memory testing: total recall Present grid of letters for 300 ms, have participants write letters they recall
Transient memory testing: Sperling task same thing, but have participants report only one row, signaled by a tone
How much is held in STM? digit span, miller says 7 plus or munis 2 numbers can be stored.
Chunking in STM, finding meaning in numbers can make it easier to remember them (ex 12671209 vs 1267 1209)
Working memory proposed by Alan Baddeley and Graham Hitch as a buffer to maintain information for a short period.
Baddeley's 3 components to working memory Phonological loop: inner voice Visuospatial sketchpad: inner eye Central executive: attention
Delayed Nonmatch-to-sample (DNMS) object shown, delay, choose the non-matching object. Requrires visual memory of object to be help in mind.
Central Executive working part of your mind
cognitive control (executive control/function) provides complex organization in response to environmental demands
Self-ordered memory task At each step, choose an item not yet selected, this requires monitoring of memory for each step
Wisconsin card sorting Switching between tasks by trying to learn a rule governing the sorting of cards, but the rule is changed constantly
Stroop task Green (but it is highlighted red)
Raven progressive matrix test of intelligence used as an intelligence test, finding patters in shapes
Prefrontal cortex critical for working memory
Ventrolateral PFC supports encoding and retrieval
Dorsolateral PFC supports higher order executive control functions
Schizophrenia poor working memory, altered frontal lobe function. Do poorly on Wisconsin card sorting task and decrease in DLPFC activity
ADHD may involve dysfunction in PFC cortical and subcortical connections. ADHD may be involved in dopamine regulation

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
