What are the four pillars? IRIS: Intersectionality, Role of State, Indispensability, Scale,
What is Intersectionality? Recognizing how social categories, including the more-than-human world, overlap and intersect with each other to perpetuate discrimination.
What is Role of State? State power often maintains inequalities (e.g. institutional racism, redlining), hence the role of state is asking how much power the state should have.
What is Indispensability Recognizing that all members of a system have value and a right to contribute to the system. It emphasizes collective responsibility and forbids anything that restricts ones ability to contribute.
What is Scale? Scale asks what percentage or amount of existence we are looking at, in terms of spatial (e.g. local vs global), temporal (e.g. future generations), or size (i.e. who/how many).
What are the 8 arguments for preserving biodiversity? Scientific, aesthetic, cultural, economic, ecological, evolutionary, ethical, emotional
Explain scientific It could hold new insights
Explain aesthetic It is beautiful
Explain cultural It holds cultural significance
Explain economic It generates money
Explain ecological It is important to a particular ecosystem
Explain evolutionary It holds important links to the past
Explain ethical It has inherent value
Explain emotional It is cute or otherwise endeared by humans
