QuestionAnswer
Sophomore a second-year student in a high school or college
Rhythm in poetry, the pattern formed by stressed and unstressed syllables
Alliteration a poetic or literary effect achieved by using several words that begin with the same or similar consonants, as in "Whither wilt thou wander, wayfarer?"
Vernacular the everyday language of the people in a country or region, as distinct from official or formal language
Onomatopoeia the formation or use of words that imitate the sound associated with something, e.g. "hiss" and "buzz"
Prose A literary work that uses the familiar spoken form of language, sentence after sentence. (Usually, organized in sentences and paragraphs.)
Allusion A reference to a well-known person, place, event, literary work, or work of art to enrich the reading experience by adding meaning
Imagery Words or phrases that appeal to a reader’s senses
Hyperbole Purposeful exaggeration for emphasis or humor
Periodical Another word for magazine
philanthropy The effort to increase the well-being of humankind, as by charitable aid or donations
soliloquy In drama or literature, a speech in which a character talks to himself or herself, revealing his or her thoughts without addressing a listener
metamorphosis Any complete change in form, structure, appearance, character, circumstances, etc.
