Measures of Center
Key vocabulary words and examples on the measures of center.

| What is a statistical question? | A question that can be answered by collecting data that varies. |
| How do you find the mean of a data set? | Add all the numbers in the data set then divide the total by the amount of numbers in the data set. |
| What is the median of a data set? | The middle number of a data set when placed in numerical order. |
| What is the mode of a data set? | The number that occurs (repeats) the most in a data set. |
| What happens when you have two numbers for your median? | You have to find the average of both numbers. |
| Can you have more than one mode in a data set? | Yes, when you have two modes the data set is bimodal. |
| Calculate the mean: {4, 4, 3, 9, 5} | 3 + 4 + 4 + 5 + 9 = 25 25/5 = 5 The mean is 5. |
| Find the median: {10, 13, 11, 13, 13} | 10, 11, 13, 13, 13 The median is 13. |
| Identify the mode(s): {5, 12, 13, 16, 12, 14, 12, 5, 10} | 5, 5, 10, 12, 12, 12, 13, 14, 16 The mode is 12. |
| Calculate the mean: {8, 4, 5, 8, 5, 4, 8} | 4 + 4 + 5 + 5 + 8 + 8 + 8 = 42 42 ÷ 7 = 6 The mean is 6 |
| Find the median: {42, 34, 36, 24, 34, 38} | 24, 34, 34, 36, 38, 42 34 + 36 = 70 70/2 = 35 The median is 35. |
