| context clue | a hint in the surrounding text that can help a reader infer the meaning of an unfamiliar word, phrase, or description |
| contrast context clue | text that provides a clue to the meaning of a word through a contrast |
| definition context clue | text that provides a definition of a word |
| example context clue | text that provides a clue to the meaning of a word through one or more examples |
| infer | to determine something not stated directly by using reasoning and evidence from the text |
| generate questions | to ask and answer questions before, during, and after reading a text |
| purpose | ways to approach a text that help you make meaning of the words on a page |
| comprehension | the ability to understand something |
| text dependent response | short and concise answer to questions about a text that include supporting evidence from the text |
| textual evidence | details from the text that a reader can use to support his or her ideas and opinions about the text |
| context | the events, situations, or language that surround a particular word, phrase or piece of text that help explain its meaning |
| figurative language | expressions used for descriptive or rhetorical effect that are not literally true but that express some truth beyond the literal level |
| figure of speech | a word or phrase not meant to be taken literally, but rather used for effect |
| metaphor | a figure of speech that compares two seemingly unlike things but implies a comparison instead of stating it directly with the word like or as |
| personification | a figure of speech in which an animal, an object, a force of nature, or an idea is given human form or qualities |
| simile | a figure of speech that uses the word like or as to compare two seemingly unlike things |
| paraphrase | to restate an entire passage from a text in your own words |
| prompt | a statement about a particular topic, idea, or issue, followed by questions that works to inspire or guide a reader’s response |
| short constructed response | a brief, organized written composition that answers a prompt |
| textual evidence | details from the text that a reader can use to support his or her ideas and opinions about the text |
| alley | a narrow street or area located behind buildings |
| germ | a very small living thing that causes sickness |
| invisible | unable to be seen |
| nonsense | silly behavior |
| raggedy | in shabby condition |
