figurative language expressions used for descriptive or rhetorical effect that are not literally true but that express some truth beyond the literal level
figure of speech a word or phrase not meant to be taken literally, but rather used for effect
metaphor a figure of speech that compares two seemingly unlike things but implies a comparison instead of stating it directly with the word like or as
personification a figure of speech in which an animal, an object, a force of nature, or an idea is given human form or qualities
simile a figure of speech that uses the word like or as to compare two seemingly unlike things
paraphrase to restate an entire passage from a text in your own words
prompt a statement about a particular topic, idea, or issue, followed by questions that works to inspire or guide a reader’s response
short constructed response a brief, organized written composition that answers a prompt
textual evidence details from the text that a reader can use to support his or her ideas and opinions about the text
alley a narrow street or area located behind buildings
germ a very small living thing that causes sickness
