| personification | a kind of metaphor in which a nonhuman thing or quality is represented as having human qualities |
| hyperbole | an intentionally exaggerated figure of speech |
| idiom | an expression that does not mean what is literally says; is peculiar to a given language |
| onomatopoeia | a word whose sound imitates its meaning |
| assonance | repetition or similar vowel sounds that are followed by different consonant sounds, especially words that are close together |
| symbolism | the use of one thinkg to suggest something else, such as an abstract idea |
| analogy | comparison made between two things to show how they are alike in some respects |
