The imperative can be conjugated only with “tu,” “voi,” and “noi.” The imperative forms of “tu” and “voi” are the same as in the present tense, with the exception of -are verbs, to which an -a is added to the root of the verb. No changes are needed for verbs ending in -ere and -ire. The imperative of “noi” is identical to the present tense and is used to encourage or urge action. It is equivalent to the English form “Let’s do something.”
Mangiare TU mangi-a! / eat! VOI mangi-ate! / eat! NOI mangi-amo! / let’s eat! mangi - formal
Pendere TU prend-i! / take! VOI prend-ete! / take! NOI prend-iamo! / let’s take! prenda - formal
Aprire TU apr-i! / open! VOi Vapr-ite! / open! NOI apr-iamo! / let’s open! apra - formal
Negative Imperative To form a negative imperative (such as “don’t do it” or “don’t eat it”), you should place “non” before the verb in the “voi” form. For the “tu” form, use the infinitive of the verb preceded by “non.”
Correre TU Non correre! VOI Non correte!
Fumare TU Non Fumare! VOI Non fumate!
Bere TU Non Bere VOI Non bevete!
Pronouns and Imperative Typically, pronouns attached to the end of the verb, *In the negative form, the pronouns can either precede the verb or merge with it at the end. mangialo! Eat It non toccarlo! – non lo toccare! Don't touch it non comprali – non li comprare!, Don’t buy them!
When these verbs are coupled with a pronoun, the first letter of the attached pronoun is doubled, with the exception of “gli” and its compound forms.
Fammi vedere Let me see! Dimmi la verità! Tell me the truth! Dammi la borsa! Give me the bag! Digli il segreto! Tell him the secret!
Venire. (tu) vieni. (noi) veniamo. (voi) venite / (loro) vengano. (lei) venga.
Formal imperative and pronouns, When it comes to pronouns, the formal imperative requires the pronouns to be placed before the verb. The Loro ending of -ere and -ire verbs, changes to -ano where present tense is ono.
Imperative form of regular -are verbs; aspettare Tu - aspetta! Voi - aspettate! Noi - aspettiamo! Lei -aspetti;
Imperative form of regular -ere verbs; rispondere Tu - rispondi; Voi - rispondete! Noi - rispondiamo! Lei - risponda!;
Imperative form of regular -ire verbs; sentire Tu - senti; Voi - sentite! Noi - sentiamo! Lei - senta!;
Imperative form of -isc verbs; finire Tu - finisci! Voi - finite! Noi - finiamo! Lei - finisca!
"Tu" form: The pronoun is attached to the end of the verb, often dropping the final vowel of the verb (if it ends in -e). Example: "Guarda la foto" (Look at the photo) becomes "Guardala" (Look at it). "Voi" form: Similar to the "tu" form, the pronoun is attached to the end of the verb. Example: "Guardate la foto" (Look at the photo, plural) becomes "Guardatela" (Look at it, plural). "Lei" form: The pronoun is placed before the verb as a separate word. Example: "Guardi la foto" (Look at the photo, formal) becomes "La guardi" (Look at it, formal). Negative Imperative: The pronoun can be placed either before or after the verb. If it comes after the verb, it is attached to the end, "Non guardare la foto" (Don't look at the photo) becomes "Non guardarla" or "Non la guardare". Doubling of the Consonant: When a pronoun is attached to the end of a one-syllable imperative form (like "da'", "di'", "fa'", "sta'"), the consonant of the pronoun is doubled, except for "gli".
