Solubility
Separating mixtures, solubility curves
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is a mixture? | a mixture is made up of two or more different substances mingled together, but not chemically combined |
| What does soluble mean? | can dissolve in liquid |
| What does insoluble mean? | can't dissolve in liquid |
| What is a solvent? | The liquid a substance dissolves in |
| What is a solute? | A substance that dissolves in a liquid |
| What is a solution? | The mixture of a solvent and solute |
| What is a diluted solution? | A solution that has very little solute in it and can dissolve a lot more |
| What is a concentrated solution? | A solution that has a lot of solute in it and can dissolve a little more |
| What is a saturated solution? | A solution that has the maximum amount of solute and can't dissolve anymore |
| How do you measure a solubility curve? | Take the temperature and the amount of solute dissolved at that temperature and put a dot on the graph, continue and then connect the dots at the end |
| What is solubility? | mass of solute (in grams) which will dissolve in 100 grams of solvent at a fixed temperature |
