| ionic bond | The attraction between oppositely charged ions. |
| covalent bond | A chemical bond formed when two atoms share electrons. |
| polar bond | A covalent bond in which valence electrons are shared unequally. |
| nonpolar bond | A covalent bond in which valence electrons are shared equally. |
| element | The simplest pure substance that cannot be broken down into other substances. |
| atom | The smallest particle of an element. |
| valence electrons | Electrons involved in bonding between atoms. They are held loosely by the atom. |
| atomic number | The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom. |
| period | A row across the periodic table. |
| ductile | Metals that can be pulled into thin strands or wires. |
| malleable | Metals that can be rolled into thin sheets or beaten into shapes. |
| theory | A well tested idea that explains a wide range of observations. |
| model | Physical, mental, visual, and other representations of an idea. |
