What is the Code of Chivalry? The expectation of a knight to be brave, obey his lord, protect women, elderly, and children, honor the church, help people
Why were castles built? Protection
Describe why manors were considered self-sufficient. Serfs and peasants produced all the goods needed on the manor to survive.
The reason for the Crusades Christians were being robbed on their way to visit Jerusalem therefore the Pope wanted to reclaim the holy land
Define Pilgrimage a religious journey to visit holy sites
What does the Red Cross symbolize? symbolizes a unified army of Christians to reclaim Jerusalem
Positive effects of the Crusades Trade increased in towns due to spices, silk, and rice, Muslims and Christians learned to respect each other
Negative effects of the Crusades Many people died, Christians lost interest because they lost frequent battles
Why were towns/cities growing during and after the Crusades? increase in trade of spices, silk, and rice and for goods needed, increase in job opportunities
What was a charter? A document that gave the townspeople the right to self-govern laws and taxes
What was the purpose of a guild? To set hours worked, To set prices of goods, Monitor quality of goods
What was the Black Death/Plague? A pandemic that killed 245-30 million people
How did the Black Death/Plague spread? rats and fleas carried the disease and it was spread throughout Europe by trade.
How did Black Death/Plague affect the economy (businesses)? Shops closed down and trading stopped
Why did Feudalism come to an end? Many people died because of the Black Death/Plague. This left job opportunities which serfs on manors wanted. This, in effect, ended feudalism.
What is a Nation-State? A single ruler, army, set of written laws, and paid government officials
Who supported nation-states? Traders supported nation-states because they were protected by the army and could safely trade.
Who did NOT support nation-states? Nobles did not support nation-states because the king took away their power.
What is the Magna Carta? The Magna Carta is a document signed by King John that limits his power. The document states that the king must follow the same laws as everyone else making everyone equal.
Who signed the Magna Carta and why was he opposed? King John of England and he was opposed because it limited his power
Why do knights volunteer to fight in the crusades? Knights were given the chance to show their advanced fighting skills.
