Explain the Conflict in the story Drives the action of the novel. Ponyboy deals with familial (Darry) and community (Greasers) conflict and turmoil. The rivalry is “born of a grudge” between two different classes.
Explain the Identity theme Greasers: long, greasy hair, East (wrong) side violent, poor streetwise territorial. Socials: short, neat hair, West (rich) side, educated, not street wise, cowardly tactics. Honour and loyalty hold the groups together, and break them apart
Explain the Rich vs Poor theme The rivalry between the two gangs stems from their socio-economic backgrounds. As characters experience personal growth, they realise the differences do not make them natural enemies.
