Algebraic and Coordinate Math Vocabulary

| x-axis | the horizontal number line in a coordinate plane |
| y-axis | the vertical axis on a coordinate plane |
| coordinate plane | A coordinate system formed by the intersection of a horizontal number line, called the x-axis, and a vertical number line, called the y-axis. |
| coordinate pair | An ordered pair of numbers used to locate a point on a coordinate grid. |
| ordered pair | A pair of numbers that can be used to locate a point on a coordinate plane |
| corresponding terms | Numbers that are in the same position in two or more related patterns |
| terms | A number, a variable, or a product of numbers and variables. |
| pattern | The geometric or regular arrangement of something in an area of study. |
| origin | A fixed point from which coordinates are measured. (0,0) |
| x-coordinate | The first number of an ordered pair. It corresponds to a number on the x-axis. |
| y-coordinate | The second number of an ordered pair. It corresponds to a number on the y-axis. |
| evaluate | form an idea of the amount, number, or value of; assess. |
| grouping symbol | a device, such as a pair of parentheses, used to enclose an expression that should be simplified first. |
| expression | A mathematical phrase that contains operations, numbers, and/or variables. |
| operation | addition, subtraction, multiplication, division |
| rule | a statement of relation between concepts |
| categorize | To sort or arrange different items into classes or categories. |
| characterize | describe the distinctive nature or features of a group of items, numbers, concepts |
| anticipate | regard as probable; expect or predict |
| concept | A general idea or thought about something |
