accident prevention formula be alert (IPDE), be prepared, and act in time
if you are in a collision... stop the vehicle, remain calm, call for help, wait at the scene, report to the MVC within 10 days (without police report)
ways to communicate with other drivers turn signals, hand signals, eye contact, horn, flipping headlights quickly
following distance for every 10 mph you are traveling, leave 1 car length in between you and the other car; follow 3 seconds behind other cars
roads are the most slippery... the first few minutes of rainfall
after driving through puddles... pump your breaks and test them
when driving through puddles... drive slowly and expect the car to pull to the side the puddle is on
hydroplaning when your tires ride on a film of water can lose contact with the surface of the road
hydroplaning occurs at 35 mph, can lose contact with the road at 55 mph
during a rainstorm drive... on the highest point of the road (in the center)
necessary precautions during a snowstorm remove all ice and snow from your car, use snow-studded tires, drive slowly with a lot of space in between cars
when snow studded tires are legal November 15th - April 1st
when driving at night... drive within the range of the vehicle behind you's headlights , be sure you can stop within the distance you can see ahead, allow more of a space cushion, use headlights
city driving look at least 12 seconds ahead, drive slowly, be careful for pedestrians
fines are doubled in... construction zones
what to do when your car hydroplanes ease off the gas, avoid using steering wheel and breaks
when driving during a snowstorm... don't pump breaks, remove foot from gas, slowly turn steering wheel
when there is a hood latch failure... slow down, look out the side windows or underneath hood, pull to the side of the road, call for help
what to do when your car skids take foot off of the gas, steer in the direction the back end is going, look in the direction you want to go, don't use breaks
things that cause skidding sudden turns, sudden lane changes, hard braking, common on wet/icy roads
what to do when your car runs off of the pavement stay on shoulder, gradually slow down, once vehicle returns to 25 mph merge back onto roadway, don't try to turn back onto road right away
what to do when there is a car fire don't try to put it out, get out and away from the car, call for help
what to do when there is a break failure pump breaks hard, use emergency/parking brake, turn on hazard lights, call for help
what to do when there is tire blowout grip the steering wheel, gradually slow down, don't use brakes, take foot off of gas, call for help once vehicle has pulled into shoulder
what to do when your gas pedal sticks keep eyes on the road, shift to neutral, steer vehicle to safe area of the roadway, turn engine off, call for help
what to do when your car gets stuck on railroad tracks get out and away from railroad tracks, call for help, run away at a 35 degree angle if a train is approaching
things that are impaired when someone drives while under the influence senses, judgement, reaction time, coordination, balance, vision
the only thing that can make someone sober time (eating doesn't help)
BAC is determined by quantity of alcohol consumed, body weight, how quickly drinks are consumed, food eaten
the best way to reduce the risk of a crash caused by drunk driving not to drive at all
21 years old and up its illegal to have a BAC of .08% or higher
younger than 21 its illegal to have a BAC of .01% or higher
when your BAC is .05% the chances of causing an accident double
when your BAC is .10% an accident is six times more likely to happen
when your BAC is .15% an accident is 25 times more likely to happen
a 12 oz can of beer is equal to... 1.5 oz of 86 proof liquor and 5 oz of wine
signs of drinking and driving speeding, weaving, slow driving, jerking motions, quick stops
the good host law stop serving alcohol before the party ends, if someone drinks too much don't let them drive
if a guest is involved in a drunk driving collision after the party... the host can get sued
drugs that may affect basic driving skills cold pills, tranquilizers, prescription medication, marijuana
if you are under 21 and caught buying/drinking alcohol and BAC is under .08% lose license for 6 months
first offense with a BAC between .08% and .10% 3-12 month license suspension
first offense with a BAC over .10% 4-6 month license suspension
reasons for license loss failure to appear in court to pay fines, failure to pay surcharges, driving while license is suspended, no insurance/registration, alcohol use, repeated traffic law violations
implied consent law motorists have agreed to submit to a breath test given my law enforcement following an arrest for a drinking and driving offense
if you refuse a breath test... $1,000 fine for 3 years = driving with a BAC of .10%
ignition interlock device device attached to the steering wheel with a built in breathalyzer, the car will not start if the motorist's BAC exceeds .05%
driver improvement program if you accumulate 12-14 points in 2 years you must complete this program; 3 points will be removed if completed; after you will be on probation for a year
defensive driving program 2 points are deducted after completion
probationary driver program if you have a permit or provisional license and are convicted for 2 or more moving violations/4 or more points in a period; 3 points will be deducted if successfully completed
if you receive 6 or more points in 3 years or less... you will get an insurance surcharge of $150 for 6 points and $25 for any additional point
unlicensed driver $100 surcharge
no liability insurance $250 surcharge
license suspension if you accumulate 12 points; if you are 13-21 and convicted of graffiti
2 points are added when you get a violation in a different state
3 points are deducted each year a motorist is violation free
moving violations (2 pts) driving on private property and failing to yield to pedestrians
if you cause an accident while your license is suspended... you will get a fine, continued suspension, jail time
driving with an open container (first offense) $200 fine
restoring your license $100 fine
habitual offender a person with 3 license suspension for violations that happened within 3 years ---could lose their license for up to 3 years
