QuestionAnswer
Central Business District (CBD) The area of a city where retail and office activities are clustered.
Services located in the CBD Business, public, and consumer services.
What is an urbanized area? In the United States, and urban area with at least 50,000 inhabitants.
What is an urban cluster? In the United States, an urban area with between 2,500 and 50,000 inhabitants.
What is the concentric zone model? A model of the internal structure of cites in which social groups are spatially arranged in a series of rings.
How is a concentric zone model laid out? 1: Central business district. 2: Zone of transition. 3: Zone of independent workers' homes. 4: Zone of better residences. 5: Commuter's zone
What is the sector model? A model of the internal structure of cities in which social groups are arranged around a series of sectors, or wedges, radiating out from the central business district.
What is a multiple nuclei model? A model of the internal structure of cities in which social groups are arranged around a collection of nodes of activities.
Example of a concentric zone model: Two households with the same income and ethnic background. One household lives in a newly constructed home, whereas the other lives in an older one.
Example of a sector model: Two households who own their homes, the sector model suggests that the household with a more modest income is unlikely to live in the same sector of the city as the household with the higher income.
Example of multiple nuclei model: People with the same ethnic or racial background are likely to live near each other.
Limitations of the models: None of the 3 models taken individually completely explains why different types of people live in distinctive parts of a city.
