Spanish Conjunctions

A list of conjunctions, some of which take the subjunctive

a menos que unless requires the subjunctive No iré a la fiesta a menos que tú también vayas. (I won't go to the party unless you also go.)
antes (de) que before requires the subjunctive Debes terminar tu tarea antes de que puedas salir a jugar. (You must finish your homework before you can go out to play.)
apenas as soon as subordinating conjunction Apenas llegué a casa, comencé a cocinar. (As soon as I got home, I started cooking.)
asi como just as, in the same way does not take the subjunctive Necesitamos sal y pimienta, así como otras especias. (We need salt and pepper, as well as other spices.)
así que as soon as requires subjunctive in a command or future statement Ya era tarde, así que me fui a dormir. (It was already late, so I went to sleep.)
aunque although requires subjunctive when stating uncertainty Aunque estaba cansada, siguió trabajando. (Even though she was tired, she kept working.)
bien que even though subordinating conjunction Bien que sabía que no debía, aún así lo hizo. (Although he knew he shouldn't, he still did it.)

mientras que while, until requires subjunctive when stating uncertainty. No puedes ver la televisión mientras que terminas tu tarea. (You cannot watch TV while you finish your homework.)
ojalá que hopefully requires the subjunctive Ojalá que todo salga bien. (I hope everything turns out well.)
para que so that requires the subjunctive Te doy estas instrucciones para que puedas entender mejor. (I give you these instructions so you can understand better.)
por miedo de que for fear that requires the subjunctive Cerré la puerta con llave por miedo de que alguien entrara. (I locked the door for fear that someone would enter.)
porque because does not take the subjunctive No puedo ir porque estoy enfermo. (I can't go because I'm sick.)
pues for, because subordinating conjunction No quieres salir, pues quédate en casa.) You don't want to go out? Well, stay at home.)
puesto que since subordinating conjunction Puesto que no hay clases hoy, podemos salir temprano. (Since there are no classes today, we can leave early.)
que that subordinating conjunction El libro que me diste es muy interesante. (The book you gave me is very interesting.)
quizás perhaps requires subjunctive when stating uncertainty Quizás vayamos al cine este fin de semana. (Maybe we will go to the movies this weekend.)
