Chemical Services

Chemical Texture service

TermDefinition
glyceryl monothioglycolate main active ingredient in true acid and acid-balanced waving lotions
half-off-base placement base control in which the hair is wrapped at an angle of 90 degrees or perpendicular to its base section and the rod is positioned half off its base
hydroxide neutralization neutralizes (deactivates) the alkaline residues left in the hair
hydroxide relaxers used to relax the hair
keratin-based smoothing treatment also called Brazilian keratein treatments; semi permanent treatment that smooths curly and wavy hair textures and eliminates frizz
lanthioization process by which hydroxide relaxers permanently straighten hair
loop rod also known as circle rod;
low-pH waves perms that uses sulfates, sulfites, and bisulfites as an alternative to ammonium thioglycolate
lye relaxers used to break the disulfide bonds and loosen curls
metal hydroxide relaxers ionic compounds formed by metal that is combined with oxygen and hydrogen
no-base relaxers relaxers that do not require application of protective base cream
off-base placement base control in which the hair is wrapped at 45 degrees blow base section's center so the rod is positioned completely off its base
on-base placement base control in which the hair is wrapped at a 45 degree angle beyond perpendicular to its base section
panels perm sections, size, shape and direction vary based on wrapping patterns
partial perms permanent waves that curl only specific areas of the head
permanent waving adds wave or curl to the hair
relaxer retouch application for hair that has received a chemical relaxer service
single flat wrap perm wrap that is similar to double flat wrap but uses only one end paper. placed over the top of the base panel of hair
sodium hydroxide relaxer also known as lye relaxer or caustic soda; used to break the disulfide bonds and loosen curls
soft bended rods known as flexible foam rods
soft curl permanent also called chemical curl reformation service; this thio-based chemical process loosens very curly hair into larger soft curls or waves
spiral perms hair is wrapped vertically until it fills the length of each rod like stripes on a candy cane
straight rods perm rods that are equal in diameter along their entire length or curling area
thio-free waves perm that uses an ingredient other than ATG as the primary reducing agent, such as cysteamine or mercaptamine
thio neutralization relies on an oxidation process to stop the action of the relaxer solution an rebuild the hair into its new form
thio relaxers use reduction and oxidation to break the disulfide bonds and then reform them to a more relaxed hair texture
true acid waves have a pH between 4.5 and 7.0 and require heat process
virgin relaxer application used for hair that has not had a previous chemical relaxer service
viscosity measurements of a liquids thickness or thinness

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
