The Nature of Sound, Properties of Sound, and Music

| vibrate | to move back and forth. |
| waves | A disturbance that transfers energy from place to place. |
| medium | The material through which a wave travels. |
| density | The ratio of the mass of a substance to its volume (mass divided by volume). |
| pitch | A description of how a sound is perceived as high or low. |
| loudness | Perception of the energy of a sound. |
| intensity | The amount of energy per second carried through a unit area by a wave. |
| decibel (dB) | A unit used to compare the loudness of different sounds. |
| Doppler effect | The change in frequency of a wave as its source moves in relation to an observer. |
| music | A set of sounds or notes combined in ways that are pleasing. |
| fundamental tone | The lowest natural frequency of an object. |
| overtone | A natural frequency that is a multiple of the fundamental tone’s frequency. |
