The Nature of Sound, Properties of Sound, and Music

TermDefinition
vibrate to move back and forth.
waves A disturbance that transfers energy from place to place.
medium The material through which a wave travels.
density The ratio of the mass of a substance to its volume (mass divided by volume).
pitch A description of how a sound is perceived as high or low.
loudness Perception of the energy of a sound.
intensity The amount of energy per second carried through a unit area by a wave.
decibel (dB) A unit used to compare the loudness of different sounds.
Doppler effect The change in frequency of a wave as its source moves in relation to an observer.
music A set of sounds or notes combined in ways that are pleasing.
fundamental tone The lowest natural frequency of an object.
overtone A natural frequency that is a multiple of the fundamental tone’s frequency.
