What is a hurricane? Intense storms that form over the tropical Atlantic Ocean
What is biodiversity? The variety of living things in an ecosystem
What ecosystem surrounds most Caribbean islands? Coral reef
What is the most common land use in Central America? Farming
What is an environmental problem that cattle ranching causes? Erosion
What is tourism? The business of providing food, places to stay, and other services to visitors from other places
What is deforestation? The clearing of large numbers of trees
What is something the Maya are known for? They were talented in astronomy, and used their knowledge in astronomy to develop a highly accurate calendar.
What was the encomienda system? A legal system to control Native Americans in the Spanish colonies. Spanish officials could tax Native Americans, force them to do work, and taught them Christianity
What is an hacienda? Huge farms or ranches
What does independence mean? The right to rule themselves
What is a dictatorship? Governments controlled by a single leader
What is carnival? A religious festival in late winter primarily observed by Roman Catholics
What is santeria? A popular religion in Cuba that combines Catholic and West African beliefs
Who are the Mestizos? People of Spanish and indigenous background. They are the largest ethnic group in Central America
What is diaspora? The spread of people from one place to many others
What type of governments are most common in Central America? Presidential democracies
What region has the most stable democracy? Costa Rica
Describe Cuba's government system Cuba is a socialist republic with a command economy. The Communist Party is the only official political party.
What is the region's major economic goal? To increase capital investment, or investment in factories and technology
What is microcredit? Small loans
What is ecotourism? Tourism that focuses on the environment and seeks to minimize environmental impact
What is a concern about ecotourism? Some people worry that it will change native cultures or harm natural habitats
What is free trade? A system where goods and services are traded between countries without government restrictions such as tariffs
In what ways are the economies of Central America and the Caribbean independent and interdependent? The region is independent politically, but many parts of the region are dependent on foreign investment to support their economies
How is Cuba's government different from those of most other countries in the region? Cuba is still a dictatorship
