Information Systems
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| 1. Introduction to Information Systems in the Warehouse | Overall, Frontline Dockworkers must have basic computer knowledge in order to understand the warehouse inventory and track packages |
| 2. inventory | all of the materials and products that currently in stock in a warehouse / distribution center |
| 3. Tracking and Updating Inventory | Dockworkers must be able to input data as they stock and remove products from the racks. They must also use the computer to track the location of products anywhere in the supply chain. |
| 4. Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) | A software program that controls and processes the movement and storage of materials as it relates to shipping, recieving, storing and picking. |
| 5.Internet | Should be isolated from the Warehouse Management Systems. The internet allows for price checking and for pick up and delivery option |
| 6. Customer Service | The WMS lets frontline workers provide the customer with the status of their order instantly. |
| 7. Tracking Inventory | - Can be paper-based but computerized data allows for faster information about quantity, location and availability of products - Very important that dockworkers enter stocking and retrieving data as accurately as possible. |
| 8. Types of Inventory Counting | -full count - shut down the warehouse and count every item - cycle counting - counting select items on a regular basis (fastest turnover of parts, highest value, slowest mover) |
| 9. Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) | The top level of Inventory management software and combines Warehouse Manangement Systems (WMS) Customer Relation Management (CRM) and Transportation Management System (TMS) software. |
| 10. Capturing Information | Most software systems collect data about inventory using technonloyg such as barcodes that help to reduce human error |
| 11. Bar codes | Printed labels that uses scanners or cameras to read them and send data to the inventory managment system |
| 12. Types of barcodes | - 1-Dimensional - A line of alternating black bars and white spaces 2 - Dimensional - A complex pattern of black shapes (For example, a QR code) |
| 13. Radio Frequency Identification | - Performs the same functions as bar codes but uses radio waves - Provides real-time in-transit tracking and does not require line of sight. - More expensive than bar codes |
| 14. Other Data Capture systems | - Voice - Magnetic Stripes -Camera |
