Civil War Vocabulary

Sectionalism Sectionalism is the expression of loyalty or support for a particular region of one's country, rather than to the country as a whole.
Fugitive United States history. fugitive slave, any individual who escaped from slavery in the period before and including the American Civil War.
Secede secession, in U.S. history, the withdrawal of 11 slave states (states in which slaveholding was legal) from the Union during 1860–61 following the election of Abraham Lincoln as president.
Abstain Abstention is a term in election procedure for when a participant in a vote either does not go to vote (on election day) or, in parliamentary procedure, is present during the vote but does not cast a ballot.
Popular Sovereignty Under popular sovereignty, the government's authority comes from the people.
Border ruffians These were the infamous "border ruffians," who threatened to shoot, burn and hang those opposed to slavery.
Arsenal A place where weapons and other military supplies are stored.

States rights States' rights are the rights held by U.S. states to govern themselves beyond the control of the federal government.

Blockade During the Civil War, Union forces established a blockade of Confederate ports designed to prevent the export of cotton and the smuggling of war materiel into the Confederacy.
Offensive Actively attacking someone. Ordnance: The term used for military supplies, such as weaponry and ammunition.
Rebel Loyal to the Confederate States
Yankee Yankee was a term used by Southerners to describe their rivals from the Union, or northern, side of the conflict.
Blockade runner the "blockade runners," a small group of sailors who sailed goods in and out of Southern seaports under the guns of Northern ships.
Ironclad The ironclad was a new kind of warship first used in the Civil War. Previous warships had been built out of wood. These ships could be easily sunk by cannonballs.
Casualty In wartime, you'll hear the word casualty used often for someone killed or injured.
Emancipate "that all persons held as slaves" within the rebellious states "are, and henceforward shall be free."
Ratify To ratify means to approve or enact a legally binding act that would not otherwise be binding in the absence of such approval.
Habeas corpus The doctrine of habeas corpus is the right of any person under arrest to appear in person before the court, to ensure that they have not been falsely accused.
Draft Civil War Military Draft Act, was an Act passed by the United States Congress during the American Civil War to provide fresh manpower for the Union Army.
Bounty program of cash bonuses paid to entice enlistees into the army.
Greenback Key Takeaways. Greenback is a slang term for U.S. dollars.
Inflation Inflation is the rate of increase in prices over a given period of time.
Entrenched to dig or occupy a trench for defensive purposes.
Total war Total war is defined as “a war that is unrestricted in terms of the weapons used, the territory or combatants involved, or the objectives pursued.”
