| Sectionalism | Sectionalism is the expression of loyalty or support for a particular region of one's country, rather than to the country as a whole. |
| Fugitive | United States history. fugitive slave, any individual who escaped from slavery in the period before and including the American Civil War. |
| Secede | secession, in U.S. history, the withdrawal of 11 slave states (states in which slaveholding was legal) from the Union during 1860–61 following the election of Abraham Lincoln as president. |
| Abstain | Abstention is a term in election procedure for when a participant in a vote either does not go to vote (on election day) or, in parliamentary procedure, is present during the vote but does not cast a ballot. |
