Chem 112 isomers

Different types of isomers

TermDefinition
structural isomers different connections between atoms (linkage/coordination)
linkage isomer when a ligand bonds to the central atom using different donor atoms
coordination isomers when the ligand and counterion in a formula change places
stereoisomers same connections between atoms, different spatial arrangements (geometric/optical)
geometric isomers isomers that are not mirror images of one another (cis/trans, fac/mer)
cis- isomer bonds of similar elements on the same side of a central atom
trans- isomer bonds of similar elements on opposite sides of a central atom
fac- isomer bonds of similar elements in the same plane
mer- isomer bonds of similar elements in different planes
optical isomers mirror images of a compound that cannot be overlayed
achiral an object that lacks handedness
chiral an object that has handedness
