Circular Motion, SHM
LC Physics (HL Only)
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Angular Velocity | Rate of change of angle with respect to time |
Centripetal Force | Force on a body in circular motion directed towards centre. |
Centripetal Acceleration | Acceleration a body has when moving in a circle and it is always directed towards the centre. |
Period of an Orbit | Time taken for a satellite to go around the central body once. |
Kepler's Third Law | The square of the orbital period is directly proportional to the cube of the radius of rotation. |
Geostationary Orbit | A satellite is said to be in geostationary orbit if: 1. The period is 24 hours 2. Orbit is in the equatorial plane 3.Direction of orbit is the same as the direction the Earth rotates |
Hooke's Law | Restoring force is directly proportional to the displacement of an elastic object provided the elastic limit is not exceeded. |
Simple Harmonic Motion | A body is moving with SHM if: 1. Acceleration is directly proportional to its distance from a fixed point. 2. Its acceleration is always directed towards that point. |
