Poetic techniques

| Alliteration | Consonants used close together, Same letter at the start of each word e.g. Ben, Bounced, Ball |
| Assonance | Broad vowels used close together e.g. Bounce, Around, Sound |
| Sibilance | S sounds used close together e.g. she sells sea shells on the seashore |
| Personification | Giving objects human qualities e.g. the hill was crying |
| Hyperbole | Exaggeration e.g. I have a mountain of homework |
| Imagery | Creating an image using one of the 5 senses Touch, Smell, Sight, Taste, Hear |
| Simile | Comparing two things using like, as or than e.g. Fast like a fox |
| Metaphor | Comparing two things without using like, as or than e.g. Heart of gold |
| Rhyme | Words that sound similar e.g. Men, Hen |
| Repetition | The repeating of words e.g. Martin Luther King speech, I have a dream |
| Allusion | Reference to another topic, literacy piece or historical event e.g. I'm the Romeo to your Juliet |
| Enjambments | Run on lines e.g. I hear the lake water lapping- down by the shore |
| Idiom | Referring to one thing meaning something else e.g. Under the weather |
