Math II: Unit 7
Term | Definition |
---|---|
experiment | an investigation or a procedure with varying results |
outcome | a possible result from the experiment |
sample space | the set of all possible outcomes |
probability | a measure of the chance of a specific event occuring, noted as P(E); expressed as a ratio of favorable outcomes to the total number of outcomes; written as a fraction, decimal, or percentage; the sum of all probabilites is 1 |
complement | the probability of an event not occuring; since the sum of all probabilities in a sample is 1, the probability of the event not occurring is P(~E) = 1- P(E) |
theoretical probability | the likelihood of an event based on mathematical reasoning (what SHOULD happen) |
experimental probability | the likelihood of an event based on the results of an experiment (what DOES happen) |
tree diagrams | diagrams used to organize and show possible outcomes of probability |
fundamentals of counting principle | if one activity can occur in "m" ways and another activity can occur in "n" ways, then both activities can occur in "mn" ways |
compound probability | the probability of two or more simple events |
independent probability | states that the outcome of one event has no effect on the outcome of another event |
dependent probability | states that the outcome of the first event affects the outcome of the second event |
multiplication rule of probability (independent) | P(AB) = P(A) * P(B) |
multiplication rule of probability (dependent) | P(A and B) = P(A) * P(B / A) - "B in regards to A" |
