Stellar Evolution and Stars (Section 8)

QuestionAnswer
What is a nebula? A star's initial state of dust and gas
What is a protostar? The result of gravity pulling together the dust and gas of a nebula
What 3 changes take place in a protostar? 1. Temperature rises 2. Star gets denser 3. Nuclear fusion occurs when temperature is high enough
Why does temperature increase when a star becomes denser? Particles begin to collide more often
Once nuclear fusion starts in a protostar, what does it become? A main sequence star
During the main sequence, the star is in equilibrium and said to be stable. What does this mean? The inward force due to gravity is equal to the outward pressure force from expanding hot gases in the star
What causes a main sequence star to compress? The hydrogen in the core runs out in the inward force of gravity becomes greater than the outward force of thermal expansion
A main sequence star only fuses together hydrogen to make ______ helium
What 2 things might happen to a star after a supernova explosion? 1. Collapse into a black hole 2. Condense into a neutron star
What kind of elements do supernovas form? Elements heavier than iron
What does a star's colour tell us? Its temperature
What is the hottest colour of star? Blue
What is the coldest colour of star? Red
What is the main difference between absolute magnitude and apparent magnitude? Absolute magnitude compares star brightness at a standard distance, while apparent magnitude compares star brightness from Earth

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
