Microbes - Living Organisms
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| lytic cycle | a viral reproductive cycle, during which a virus takes over all metabolic activities of a cell and causes the host cell to die |
| VIRULENT PHAGES | Bacteriophages that ONLY reproduce using the lytic cycle |
| bacteriophage | also known as phages, are viruses that infect and replicate only in bacterial cells |
| bacteria | tiny, single-celled organisms that get nutrients from their environments; reproduce - binary fission |
| unicellular | made up of only one cell that carries out all of the functions needed by the organism |
| Genetic transfer | How prokaryotic cells acquire new genetic material and thus increase the genetic variation in the population; The introduction of new DNA into an existing organism's cell |
| photosynthesis | the process by which green plants and certain other organisms transform light energy into chemical energy. |
| Antibiotic resistance | happens when germs like bacteria and fungi develop the ability to defeat the drugs designed to kill them |
| chitin | the building material that gives strength to the exoskeletons of crustaceans, insects, and the cell walls of fungi |
| hyphae | the feathery filaments that make up multicellular fungi; They release enzymes and absorb nutrients from a food source. Hyphae have a firm cell wall made of chitin |
