probability terms

TermDefinition
Categorical Data data that consists of non numeric information
Chance Event the outcome or set of outcomes of an experiment
Data Distribution a graphical representation of data that was collected
Experimental Probability the ratio of the number of times an event occurs to the total number of trials, or times that the activity is performed
Interquartile Range the difference between the upper and lower quartiles in a box-and-whisker plot
Mean the sum of the items in a set of data divided by the number of items in the set; also called average
Mean Absolute Deviation the mean distance between each data value and the mean of the data set
Measures of Center a measure used to describe the middle of a data set; mean, median, and mode
Median the middle number, or the mean (average) of the two middle numbers, in an ordered set of data
Numerical Data data that consists of numerical information
Outcome a possible result of a probability experiment
Probability a number from 0 to 1 (or 0% to 100%) that describes how likely an event is to occur
Quantitative data represented numerically, including anything that can be counted, measured, or given a numerical value
Range the difference between the greatest and least values in a data set
Simple Events an event consisting of only one outcome
Theoretical Probabilities the ratio of the number of ways an event can occur to the total number of equally likely outcomes
