Unit 9 RedOx
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Oxidation-Reduction Reaction | A reaction that involves the transfer of electrons between reactants |
| Voltaic Cell | An electrochemical cell in which a spontaneous chemical reaction causes a flow of electrons |
| Electrolytic Cell | A cell that requires electricity to cause a nonspontaneous reaction |
| Oxidation | The loss of electrons |
| Reduction | The gain of electrons |
| Oxidation Number | Number assigned to keep track of electron gain or loss in redox reactions |
| Oxidizing Agent | The substance reduced in a redox reaction |
| Reducing Agent | The substance oxidized in a redox reaction |
| Half-Reaction | A reaction that shows either the oxidation or reduction portion of a redox reaction |
| Spontaneous Reaction | reaction that favors the formation of the products without any additional help |
| Nonspontaneous Reaction | A reaction that does not favor the formation of the products without additional help |
| Electrode | The site at which oxidation or reduction occurs |
| Anode | The site where oxidation occurs |
| Cathode | The site where reduction occurs |
| Salt Bridge | art of a voltaic cell that connects two containers and allows the flow of ions |
