What is the purpose of Consuls? Had total control of the army to expand the empire
Who is the conflict of orders a struggle between? Between the patricians and the plebs
What did the plebeians fight to get? equal rights
How did the plebeians solve the conflict? marched out of Rome and camped out on the hills (boycotted) until the patricians gave them more rights
Why did the patricians finally compromise with the plebeians? Rome was unprotected due to the soldiers boycott
What changes were made in the Senate after the Conflict of orders? Tribune: 10 plebs attended all Senate meeting to make sure the laws being passed were fair to the plebs
What changes were made to the consuls after the Conflict of orders? Consuls: 1 patrician and 1 pleb therefore both social classes were represented
What changes were made to the laws after the Conflict of orders? 12 Table: a set of written laws that could not be changed
What land did the Romans conquer during the 1st expansion? Rome, Italian Peninsula
Who viewed the 1st expansion negatively and why? Plebs forced to serve in army; taxes were high
Who fought in the Punic Wars? Rome and Carthage
Why were the Punic Wars fought? Both wanted control of the Mediterranean Sea Trade
Who viewed the 2nd expansion negatively and why? Plebs forced to serve in army; taxes were high
Who assassinated Julius Caesar? Roman Senate
Why was Julius Caeser assassinated? Senate thought if Caesar declare himself King they would lose their power
What happened to Rome after Julius Caesar was assassinated? Civil war broke out; Plebs were resentful because they were forced to serve in the army, pay taxes, and their jobs were given to slaves
What positive contributions did Augustus make to the Roman empire? Improved trade by building roads, created a police force, fire department, restored temples
Why did Augustus ask the Roman Senate for advice? He didn’t want to be assassinated and to make the Senate think they had power by asking their advice.
What was the Pax Romana? 200 Years of peace and prosperity
What made the Pax Romana possible? The army made it possible by protecting the borders of the empire
Caligula mentally unstable, declared himself a god, made his horse a member of the Senate, assassinated by his bodyguards
Claudius returned art stolen by Caligula to citizens, granted citizenship to people of empire, improved Roman laws
Nero felt threatened by anyone who criticized him, murdered family members
Marcus Aurelius lowered taxes, sold his own possessions to help ease famine, built schools and orphanages, promoted kinder treatment of slaves
What led to the decline of Rome? 1. Civil War between emperors 2. heavy taxes led to poverty and famine 3. huge size of the empire was difficult to control/ invaders from north, south, and east
What did the decline of Rome mark? The end of ancient times. Europe broke down into kingdoms
