idiom | a word or phrase that is not taken literally, like “bought the farm” has nothing to do with purchasing real estate, but refers to dying |
interpret | to understand something in a specified way, to explain the meaning of something |
reflects | to cause people to think of someone or something in a specified way, provide evidence for; stand as proof of |
point of view | refers to the position or standpoint from which the story is told, the way something is viewed or considered, there are 3 points of view. |
first person | First-person - A character within the story recounts/retells his or her own experiences or impressions. If you see the words "I," "me," or "we." |
third person | Third person- The narrator has unlimited knowledge and can describe every character’s thoughts and interpret their behaviors. Uses the pronouns: he, she, it, they. |
speaker | the speaker is the voice behind the poem. Think of the speaker of a poem as a character—someone to be analyzed, thought about, and discovered |
mood | literary element that evokes certain feelings or vibes in readers through words and descriptions |
tone | an attitude of a writer toward a subject or an audience. |
plot | the events that make up a story |
stanza | group of lines of poetry (usually 4 or more) |
moral | a message conveyed by, or a lesson learned from, a story, a poem, or an event |
explicit | very clear and complete : leaving no doubt about the meaning |
conclude | to form or state an opinion : to come to a logical decision based on given information |
theme | the message an author is trying to teach the reader, a generalization that can be applied in other instances. |
conflict | opposing characters or forces, the problem, gives rise to the dramatic action in a drama or fiction |
resolution | the solution to the conflict or problem |
impression | the power to have an important effect on someone or something, the effect of an outside influence or event |
generalization | a general statement, idea, or principle, a statement that applies to a group of people of things |
determine | to find out, decide given option or possibilities |
interaction | the act of talking, communicating, reacting or doing things with other people, the action or influence of things on one another |
context | the text or speech that comes immediately before and after a piece of text that influences what it means, the conditions and events related to a particular event or situation |
claim | state or assert that something is true or factual, typically without providing evidence or proof |
accurately | precise; exact. |
