In what ways did Islam influence West African society? It enabled rulers to build larger Kingdoms and empires embracing different peoples and Linguistic groups. It also provided them with a commonly accepted basis of authority in place of African traditional religious which differed from place to place.
How did Islam spread in West Africa? People were merchants who were a large part of the trans-Saharan trade. These caravans would cross the Sahara Desert to trade with the large, rich sub-Saharan empires, and they brought the religion with them.
What were some of the religious practices? They learned the Five Pillars of Islam. They prayed in Arabic, fasted, worshipped in mosques, made pilgrimages, and gave alms. They were taught to regard themselves and all other Muslims as part of a single community.
How did the government change? One major change concerned the line of succession, or inheritance of the right to rule. In West Africa, the succession had traditionally been matrilineal, meaning the right to rule was traced through the mother or a female relative, rather than the fathe
How was education impacted? There was more education, Muslims encouraged people to pursue an education. They built many schools and centers of learning.
Did islamic language change? For Muslims, Arabic was the language of religion. The Qur’an, of course, was written in Arabic. West Africans converted to Islam, more and more of them learned Arabic. So only it was west africans being converted
What language was used in education? Arabic also became the language used in education, since the scholars who came to West Africa were mainly Arabic-speaking Muslims.
What did muslims use for their art? Muslims used calligraphy and geometric patterns in their decorative arts. West Africans adopted these intricate designs for their own art and textiles.
What was their architectural style? The influence of Islam brought new styles of architecture to West Africa as well Islamic architecture comprises the architectural styles of buildings associated with Islam. It encompasses both secular and religious styles from the early history of Islam
Where did muslims base their art off of? Muslims used calligraphy to decorate objects with words or verses from the Qur’an
