Unit 1: What is Indigenous Studies?

Method The tools that are used to conduct indigenous research such as ceremony, protocols, and sharing circles.
Methodology The framework or theories that guides indigenous research such as surveys, archives, focus groups, and interviews. Methodology affects the selection of methods.
Qualitative research Understanding the lived experiences of indigenous people within their cultural context and perspectives through oral history.
Quantitative research Using Indigenous voices and using strength based statistical data
Insurgent research methodology Action oriented, giving authority back to the indigenous community, research conducted by and for indigenous communities, prioritize community empowerment
Tribal epistemology The system of production, indigenous ways of knowing through oral traditions and ceremonies.
Ontology The categories used to explain the world around us, who we are, who we claim to be, our connection to the land and people around us through interconnectedness.
Axiology Relational accountability, the set of ethics and morals in indigenous research, respect of indigenous individuals
Indigenous Umbrella term used to describe first nations, metis, and Inuit people in Canada
First nations Indigenous peoples distinct from metis or Inuit people legally considered Indians in the Indian act
