Fertility (fertile) | A measure of how well soil supports plant growth. Usually rich with Humus |
humus | The top layer of soil made up of broken down pieces of dead plants and animals |
Litter | The loose layer of dead plant leaves and stems on the surface of the soil. |
Bedrock | Layer of large rocks below the soil |
topsoil | The layer under Humus that provides support and nutrients to plants |
decomposers | organisms that break down the remains of dead plants or animals and make them into smaller pieces and digest them with chemicals |
Nutrients | Materials found in soil that plants and animals need to grow |
soil horizon | The layer of soil that differs in color and texture from the layers above and below it. |
subsoil | The middle layer of soil which is a combination of soil and rocks |
soil | Material found on the surface of the earth consisting of a mixture of rock, sand, clay, dead plants, and animal remains. |
organic | Something living or has lived. |
inorganic | Something not living or has never lived |
