Thermal Energy
Term | Definition |
---|---|
temperature | A measure of the average energy of motion of the particles of a substance. |
thermal energy | Heat energy, a form of kinetic energy associated with molecules in motion |
solid | Definite shape and volume, molecules are tightly packed in a regular pattern, very little movement |
liquid | definite volume but no definite shape, molecules are loosely packed and and flow against each other |
gas | No definite shape or volume, molecules are very far apart and move freely |
heat | thermal energy transfer |
System | A group of parts that work together as a whole |
kinetic energy | the energy an object has due to its motion |
molecule | A group of atoms bonded together |
atom | Basic unit of matter |
boiling point | The temperature at which a liquid changes to a gas |
melting point | The temperature at which a solid becomes a liquid |
freezing | The change of state from a liquid to a solid |
sublimation | A change directly from the solid to the gaseous state without becoming liquid |
Celcius | Metric temperature scale on which water freezes at 0 degrees and boils at 100 degrees |
Fahrenheit | The temperature scale on which water freezes at 32 degrees and boils at 212 degrees |
Kelvin | SI unit for temperature |
convection | The transfer of heat by the movement of a fluid |
conduction | The direct transfer of heat from one substance to another substance that it is touching. |
Radiation | The transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves |
