Fiction Terms

Plot The action of a fictional story
exposition the beginning of a story where characters, setting, point of view are introduced
antagonist the person/ thing against the protagonist (bad guy)
protagonist the main character
supporting character characters that help and interact with the protagonist and antagonist
dynamic character characters that change and grow throughout a story
static character characters that stay the same - they never change
round character authors develop this character and gives background information on their thoughts and actions
flat character you don't know a great deal about this character and why they act the way they do
setting the time and place of a story
first person point of view when a character is telling the story - you see "I"
second person point of view when "you" are in the story
third person limited point of view a narrator outside the story is telling it - you see characters' names
conflict this begins the rising action and is the struggle between the protagonist and the antagonist
rising action the largest part of the story - the conflict is introduced and the characters are being developed
climax the most intense part of a story when the conflict is being address
resolution the conflict is resolved
theme the lesson or message of a story
types of conflicts person vs person, person vs nature, person vs society, person vs self, person vs. technology
mood the feeling you get when reading
tone the way the author writes; the author's attitude toward a topic; the sound of the author's words
connotation the emotional weight of a word
denotation the dictionary definition of a word
Infer figuring out things that the author doesn't directly state. (Something that is happening NOW)
Predict what you think will happen in the future in the story
Phonics/ Decoding chunking the words so you know how to SAY/ pronounce them
Clarify figuring out the meaning of words by using pictures, context clues, and word parts
Summarize tell the main ideas of the story in order.
Connect reading strategy in which you relate to the story; book to book, book to world, book to self
Evaluate reading strategy in which you tell what you liked or didn't like - your opinion
Characterization the way the author reveals the character's personality
Personification when an inanimate object is given human characteristics
Foreshadowing a strategy used by an author to signal future events; foreshadowing builds suspense and excitement in a plot.
Flashback When a character (usually the protagonist) is thinking about a previous time in their lives.
Person vs Self Internal conflict - the protagonist is struggling with their own beliefs
Person vs Person External conflict - the protagonist is battling a person who is causing their problems
Person vs Society External conflict - the protagonist is battling a force, idea, law, or government
Person vs Nature External conflict - the protagonist is trying to survive in nature
