Ecosystems part 1

QuestionAnswer
Ecosystem A biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment.
consumer An organism that obtains energy by feeding on other organisms also called a heterotroph (meaning other food)
producer An organism that makes its own food also known as autotroph (meaning self food)
biotic Factor living parts of an ecosystem
abiotic factors nonliving parts of an ecosystem
biotic factors examples plants, animals, fungi, bacteria, anything decomposing, things that come from animals
abiotic factors examples air, water, sunlight, soil, temperature, climate
carrying capacity Largest number of individuals of a population that a environment can support
limiting factor An environmental factor that prevents a population from increasing
limiting factors (biotic) Predator / prey relationships Competition for food Parasitism Disease Human Activities
limiting factors (abiotic) Sunlight Temperature Soil Water Changing conditions (weather, natural disasters, etc.)
