What is a major environmental concern in southern Mexico? Deforestation is an environmental concern there. Negative effects of this include that the heavy rains wash the nutrients out of the soil which makes it hard for the land to produce crops, and it contributes to the rapid destruction of Mexico’s forests.

Institutional Revolutionary Party For many decades, a single political party dominated Mexico’s government. Every six years the president would name another member of the party to succeed him, and that person would easily win the election.
National Action Party In the 2000 election a member from the National Action Party won. This was the first fair presidential election that took place after many Mexicans had voiced their frustration over the one party rule.
remittances Some of Mexico's poor people cannot find jobs, and travel to the U.S. for work. They send part of their paychecks home to support their families, and is important to Mexico’s economy and helps many poor families survive.
Mexico's constitution The constitution of 1917 defines the structure of the government, and states that all people from Mexico enjoy certain basic rights.
Legislative branch Creates the laws
Executive branch Led by the president, carries out the laws
Judicial branch Interprets the laws and decides whether actions of the other branches follow the consitution
Mexico's president The president has traditionally had more power than other branches, although Mexico's congress has gained more power recently
How is Mexico's constitution different from the US? You are required to vote in elections once you are 18 years old
