what is self-actualization? to strive to be the best you can be
what is personal identity? to sense yourself as a unique individual
what are emotions? examples? signals that tell your mind and body how to react like happiness, sadness, love, empathy, fear, anger and guilt
difference between empathy and sympathy? empathy is understanding how someone feels and sympathy is feeling sorry for them
difference between fear and phobia? fear is a feeling you can get by being startled by something or someone. it can lead to an exaggerated fear that can prevent people from living their lives, which is called phobia
what are defense mechanisms? they are mental processes that protect individuals from strong or stressful emotions and situations
what is suppression? pushing unpleasantness from one’s mind
what is a biological stesssor? illness or injury
environmental stressor? natural disasters/ weather related
cognitive stressors? thinking stressor/ how you see a situation
personal behavior stressor? poor health habits
life situation stressors? major events like death or divorce
what is the alarm stage? as soon as you recognize a stressor your body reacts and releases adrenaline
what is adrenaline? emergency hormone
what are stress responses? - heart rate and breathing increases - muscles tighten - perspiration increases - swallowing becomes hard - more blood goes to legs and brain - hearing improves
what is fight or flight response?
what is the resistance stage? body tries to recover from alarm stage by using coping strategies
what is the exhaustion stage? occurs only if distress continues for a while, it’s beyond your control and highers the chance of illness
the percentage of illness and mental disorders related to stress: 60% to 80%
what is TMJ? stress that causes people to grind or clench their teeth
what is meditation? sitting in a comfortable position and repeating a relaxing word for 10-15 minutes
what is progressive training? sitting while tensing muscles then relaxing them
what is autogenic training? daydreaming and putting yourself in a peaceful place
what is shaken baby syndrome? shaking a baby so hard it causes the brain to bounce back and forth causing severe brain damage or death
tips to destress your life? live healthy, get organized, controlled temper, and setting realistic goals
what are habits that stress worse? drugs and alcohol
what are signs are stress overload? anxiety or panic attacks, sleeping problems, sadness or depression, drinking too much, smoking, and overeating
what is anxiety? feeling worried or uneasy about what may happen
what is depression? PROLONGED feeling of hopelessness, helplessness, and sadness
what is reactive depression? a response to a stressful event like a death
what is major depression?
