Reproduction
Unit 5: Reproduction & Growth
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| asexual reproduction | Type of reproduction by which offspring arise from a single organism (offspring genetically identical). |
| mitosis | Cell division that results in 2 daughter cells having the same number and kind of chromosomes as the parent cell. |
| binary fission | A form of asexual reproduction in which fully grown parent cells split into two new cells, i.e. bacteria. Common in organisms with no nucleus. |
| budding | A form of asexual reproduction in which offspring grows out of the body of the parent. Ex: Hydra |
| fragmentation | A form of asexual reproduction in which the body of the parent breaks into distinct pieces and can produce an offspring. Starfish |
| regeneration | A form of asexual reproduction in which a piece of a parent is detached and can regrow that piece. Ex: flatworms |
| vegetative reproduction | A form of asexual reproduction in which new organisms arise without production of seeds or spores. Strawberries, potatoes. |
| somatic cells | All cells in the body, except for germ cells. |
| germ cells | Only found in reproductive cells. |
| spindle fibers | Controls the movement and separation of chromosomes during division. |
| sexual reproduction | Type of reproduction in which offspring arise from two parents. |
| meiosis | Cell division that results in 4 daughter cells with half the number of chromosomes of the parents, and produces 4 gamete cells. |
