Persuade | Trying to convince the reader of something |
Inform | the author is giving facts and information[ possibly teaching something to the reader] |
Entertain | the author wants you to enjoy the story by keeping the readers attention |
Explain | written in steps for the reader to follow |
Describe | sensory language is used to describe a topic |
Simile | A comparison of two unlike things using the words like, as, than, resembles. |
Metaphor | A comparison that speaks of one thing as if it is another -a DIRECT-comparison |
Personification | an implied comparison that gives human traits to non-human objects |
Somebody | Who is the main character Ex: Stanley Yelnats III |
Wanted | What di the main character want to happen or achieve ? Ex: Wanted to live a normal life with his family |
But | What happen instead ? Ex: But because of their family curse, he was always in the wrong place at the wrong time and he was sent to Camp Green for a crime he didn't commit |
So | How does the main character deal with the conflict Ex: Stanley tries to make the beat of the situation by making friends and working hard. He is put in a situation that gives him the opportunity to break the family cruse. |
Then | How does the story end ? Ex: Stanley breaks the family curse and finds the treasure buried by Kissin' Kate that belonged to his family. This solves a lot of problems for Stanley , Zero, and the old town Green Lake |

Tone | the authors attitude toward the topic of their writhing |
Mood | The atmosphere or emotion that the reader gets from reading a text. What mood and emotional response does the reader get from the text ? |
1st Person | The narrator is a character in the story. They are a part if the action. They use words like, I, ME, MY , WE ,US , OURS |
2nd Person | The narrator directly addresses the reader. They make you a part of the story. They will use words like YOU, YOUR, YOURS |
3rd Person Limited | The story is told by an outside narrator , but they share the thoughts of ONLY the main character. They use words like SHE, HER,/ HE, HIS |
3rd Person Objective | The narrator is an outside person that reports the story events as they take place, but doesn't know the thoughts of any of the characters |
3rd Person Omniscient | The narrator knows and sees all the thoughts and feelings of ALL the characters. ALL KNOWNING |
Tone | the authors attitude toward the topic of their writhing . What tone of voice is the author writhing? |
Mood | The atmosphere or emotion that the reader gets from reading a text. What mood and emotional response does the reader get form the text |
Descriptive | The text describes the characteristic of something |
Chronological order | the text tells a sequence of events or a list of steps |
Compare and Contrast | the text presents the similarities and differences between 2 or more things. |
Problem and Solution | the text describes a problem and how it was solved |

Captions | words that explain what is shown in a picture or illustration that shows the labeled parts of something |
Diagram | an illustration that shows the labeled parts of something |
Table of Contents | topics and the page numbers where they are located |
Index | a list of words in the back of the book and the page number where the words can be found |
Time | When? This could include the year or time period [ Past, Present, or Future ] as well as time of day |
Place | Where ? This could include City, State , Country , World, Planet, Universe, Home , Store , etc. |
Environment | What ? This could include the type of home the character lives in , the government , the living situation, etc. |
