TermDefinition
Authors Purpose Persuade- Trying to convince the reader of something Inform- the author is giving facts and information Entertain- the authors wants you to enjoy the story by keeping the readers attention Explain- written in steps for the reader to follow
Figurative Language Simile- a comparison of two unlike things using the words like, as, than, resembles Metaphor- a comparison that speaks of one thing as if it another Personification- an implied comparison that gives human traits to non-human objects
Somebody who is the main character?

so how does the main character deal with the conflict?
then how does the story end?
Narrative tells a story

Stanza like a paragraph of a poem
1st Person The narrator is a character in the story. They are a part of the action. They use words like, I, ME, MY, WE, US, OURS
2nd Person the narrator directly addresses the reader. They make YOU a part of the story. They will use words like YOU, YOUR, YOURS
3rd person Limited The story is told by an outside narrator, but they share the thoughts of ONLY the main character
3rd person objective The narrator is an outside person that reports the story events as they take place, but doesnt know the thoughts of any of the characters.
3rd person omniscient The narrator knows and sees all the thoughts and feeling of ALL the characters
Tone the authors attitude toward the topic of their writing. What time of voice is the author writing?
Mood the atmosphere or emotion that the reader gets from reading a text. What mood and emotional response does the reader get from the text.
Descriptive the text describes the characteristics of something
Chronological order the text tells a sequence of events or a list of steps
Compare and Contrast the text presents the similarities and differences between 2 or more things.
Cause and Effect the text explains the relationship between 1 event that causes another.
Problem and Solution the text describes a problem and how it was solved.
Bold print darker words that have important meaning.
Glossary gives the definitions of unfamiliar words
Pictures when the author provides a visual on the topic.
Captions words that explain what is shown in a picture or illustration
Diagram an illustration that shows the labeled parts of something.
Table of Contents topics and the page numbers where they are located
Index a list of words in the back of the book and the page number where the words can be found.
Foreshadowing when the author hints or mentions something that is about to happen, it builds suspense for the reader
Flashback when the author takes the reader back in time to explain something that happened
