Lesson 1 - The Rise of Islam
Where would religious pilgrims stop during holy months? and what would they visit? During the holy months, religious pilgrims would stop in Mecca,. They would all visit an ancient shrine in the city called the Kaaba, which was associated with Abraham, a believer in one God and who would later be considered a prophet by Muslims.
When was Muhammad born? What happened to him at the age of six? and what was the result of what happened? Muhammad was born into a powerful clan in the Meccan family. He was orphaned at the age of six, so he was raised by his grandfather and his uncle.
What is the guidance of both the Qur'an and the Sunnah combined called? and what is it? The guidance of both the Qur'an and the Sunnah combined is known as shari'a, which regulates family life, moral conduct, and business and community life of all Muslims.
why do they call Christians and Jews "people of the book"? They call Christians and Jews "people of the book" because each has a holy book with teachings similar to the Qur'an.
What were Arab nomads known as? What were they put into? Explain what they were organized into offered? Arab nomads, known as Bedouins were organized into tribes and groups called clans. Clans offered security and support for a life made difficult by the extreme conditions of the desert.
Lesson 2 - Islam Expands
When was Uthman murdered? and what did his death start? In 656, Uthman was murdered, starting a civil war in which various groups struggled for power.
What did people who did not openly resist the rule of Umayyads become known as? Those who did not outwardly resist the rule of the Umayyads later became known as Sunni, meaning followers of Muhammad’s example.
For how long did the Abbasid caliphate last for? and what did it do during that time? The Abbasid caliphate lasted from 750 to 1258. During that time, the Abbasids increased their authority by consulting religious leaders.
What was the concept of God in Christianity? Concept of Messiah was the belief that Jesus was the Messiah, has come to take on the sins of humanity, and will come again on Judgement Day to judge the living and the dead and which souls go to heaven or not.
Name a reason for Muslim success and why. A reason for Muslim success was the persecution suffered by people under Byzantine or Sassanid rule because they did not support the official state religions, Christianity or Zoroastrianism.
Lesson 3 - Muslim Culture
How many Muslim social classes were there? and say what type of people each class was made up of. Muslim society was four classes. The upper class was those who were Muslims at birth. Converts to Islam were in the second. The third class was the “protected people” and included Christians, Jews, and Zoroastrians. The lowest class was slaves.
Who was Al-Khwarizmi? and what did he write a textbook about? Al-Khwarizmi, a mathematician wrote a textbook in the 800s explaining “the art of bringing together unknowns to match a known quantity.” He called this technique al-jabr—today called algebra.
What is Muslim art like? and what did the Muslim leaders fear about it? Muslim art is intricate and colorful but often does not contain images of living beings. Muslim leaders feared that people might worship the images rather than Allah. Thus, Muslim artists found different ways to express their creativity.
What did Muslim women have that women from other places did not? Muslim women had more economic and property rights than European, Indian, and Chinese women of the same time period.
When did the Abbasids govern Muslim history? What happened during that period of time? The Abbasids governed during a prosperous period of Muslim history. Riches flowed into the empire from all over Europe, Asia, and Africa. They supported the scientists, mathematicians, and philosophers that those cities attracted.
