Writing Process Vocabulary

writing process Plan, Draft, Revise, Edit, and Publish
plan Brainstorm ideas and organize your thoughts before writing
draft Begin writing your ideas into sentences and paragraphs
revise Improve the writing by adding, replacing, or combining sentences.
edit Correct errors in capitalization, usage, punctuation, or spelling.
publish Final copy of corrected writing.
complete sentence a group of words with a subject and a predicate.
subject who or what the sentence is about
predicate what the subject of the sentece is or is doing
fragment a part of a sentence that is missing either the subject or the predicate.
run-on a sentence that contains two or more clauses that are not joined with appropriate punctuation or with a conjunction
paragraph a group of sentences that include a topic sentence, supporting detail sentences, and a conclusion sentence.
transition words a word or phrase that connects ideas between sentences or paragraphs
ECR-Extended Constructed Response a long writing prompt where the writer is explaining his/her thinking with a 3-4 paragraphs
SCR- Short Constructed Response a short writing prompt where the writer is answering a question with 2-3 sentences
hook In “Title of the Selection,” the author (summarize the prompt/passage).
thesis statement Restate the question and answer the question.
key idea One reason/Another reason/One way/Another way
text evidence The text states/The text shows/According to the text
explanation of text evidence This proves/This shows/This suggest
conclusion the last sentence of a paragraph or the last paragraph of an essay
wrap-up Transition words that show the end of a paragraph or essay (In conclusion/In summary/To sum up)
restate thesis Part of the conclusion where the thesis statement is written in a different way
takeaway Part of the conclusion where the writer expresses something he/she has learned from the text
