| Allusion | Refers to something famous |
| Analogy | Something is like something else |
| Archetype | Original model or perfect example of something |
| Connotation | Intellectual interpretation of a term |
| Denotation | Textbook definition of a word/term |
| Diction | Selection of words an author uses to create an impact or tone |
| Euphemism | Describes something impolite or taboo in a more polite manner |
| Hyperbole | Obvious or intentional exaggeration |
| Imagery | Mental images through figurative language |
| Dramatic Irony | The audience knows something the character does not |
| Situational Irony | Plot twist |
| Verbal Irony | Speaker means something very different from what they are saying |
| Juxtaposition | Two things being seen or placed close together with contrasting effect |
| Metaphor | Comparison between two things to create greater meaning |
| Simile | Comparison using like or as |
| Motif | Something that is repeated throughout the story to point towards the story's larger theme |
| Onomatopoeia | Immitation of sounds in words |
| Parallelism | Same pattern of words (he does jogging, running and swimming) |
| Epistrophe | Repeating words at the end of a sentence or clauses |
| Asyndeton | Removing conjunctions |
| Polysyndeton | Overusing conjunctions |
| Epanalepsis | Repeating words at the beginning or end of a sentence |
| Personification | Giving non-human things human characteristics |
| Anaphora | Repeating words and phrases at the beginning of a sentence or clauses |
