PhT 3 Week 3 Terms and Abbreviations
| Term | Definition |

| Artery | blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart |
| Vein | blood vessel that carries blood to the heart |
| Capillaries | smallest blood vessels, they are the site of oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange and supply nutrients and medications to the body’s cells. |
| Myocardial infarction | heart attack |
| Arteriosclerosis | hardening of the arteries |
| Atherosclerosis | plaque build up in arteries than can eventually block the artery |
| Angina pectoris | chest pain caused by a lack of oxygen to the heart |
| Cardiac arrhythmia | the heart beating at an abnormal rate or in an abnormal pattern |
| Coagulation | process of clotting to prevent blood loss |
| Platelets | blood cells integral to the clotting process |
| Thrombus | blood clot inside |
| Return-to-stock | prescription that a patient did not pick up, can be returned to pharmacy since it never left the pharmacy. |
| A-fib | atrial fibrillation, a type of cardiac arrhythmia |
| TIA | transient ischemic attack (mini-stroke) |
| DVT | deep vein thrombosis |
| PIC | Pharmacist In Charge (the head pharmacist) |
| POS | point-of-sale |
| RTS | return-to-stock |
| OSHA | Occupational Safety and Health Administration |
| SDS | safety data sheet, standardized information about handling, storage, PPE, and other pertinent data required for hazardous chemicals, replaced the old format, Material Data Safety Sheet (MSDS) |
| HIV | human immunodeficiency virus, bloodborne pathogen |
| HBV | hepatitis B, bloodborne pathogen |
| HCV | hepatitis C, bloodborne pathogen |
| carcinogenic | a substance that has the potential to cause cancer |
| teratogenic | a substance that has the potential to cause harm to an embryo or fetus |
